In August 2008, deputies raided DMX's home and seized 12 pit bulls and pit bull mixes after receiving a report that the animals were being abused. Authorities said that some of the dogs had apparently not been fed or watered. The carcasses of three dogs were found partially buried on the property and one of the dogs may have been burned, according to the Sheriff's office. The rapper's lawyer, Murray Richman, said his client had been on tour and had a caretaker was watching his dogs. The video "99 Problems" offers an irresponsible tribute to a cruel and illegal practice of pit bull fighting. In addition, the imagery shown contributes to the false belief that pit bulls are vicious, blood thirsty killing machines. Pit bulls are not born this way, they are taught this way and celebrities like Jay-Z only breed more fear and ignorance about the breed as well as promoting the cruelty of fighting and abuse. Some apologists for the violence in hip-hop videos argue that the imagery only reflects the harsh truth of the streets. Regardless, the glorification of fierce pit bulls and organized dogfighting by hip-hop artists coincides with a dramatic increase in dogfighting nationwide as well as irresponsible, abusive and poor ownership of the breed.
